Our Story

First Lutheran Christian Church moved to its new campus here at 1300 East Colorado Street in 1954. Dr. Karl Kniseley became the first pastor to serve the congregation on this new campus. He welcomed the Head Start preschool program soon after his arrival.

With the success of this education program, the congregation realized the need for a Christian school to serve Glendale and surrounding communities. First Lutheran School expanded to a lower elementary school for students up to 3rd grade. In the early 1970’s, under the direction of then Principal Jean Trantow, our school began to add a new grade level each year until reaching 6th grade.

In 2004, when Julie Sanchez became our school principal her hard work, love, and dedication helped our school expand to include 7th and  8th grade. Mrs. Sanchez also introduced the Outdoor Education Program, affording our middle school students the opportunity to take overnight trips to Catalina Island and El Camino Pines.

Principal Goetsch joined our school family in 2013, continuing the preservation of small class sizes and Christian traditions while introducing new programs and innovations. Some of the exciting changes/additions include: android tablets,  an on-line parent portal, science fairs, spelling bees, full scale musicals, a security gate with cameras, the foreign visitors program, a parent-teacher organization (PTO) and a middle school honors program!

In partnering with the WorldStrides program, our middle school students get the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C., Sacramento, and other US landmarks, as our way to expand their total education and understanding of the United States of America.

First Lutheran School is an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Education Association (ELEA). Now, with our student body, a full curriculum of subject classes and daily cultural hour, we continue our mission of preparing students for high school, and the rest of their lives. Under God’s blessing, First Lutheran School continues to grow as we serve families from all over the greater Los Angeles area.
